Hello friends! How was your first official month of summer? Mine was a lot, to say the least, and it shows through this month’s diversity in lyrics, but not in style. Also, have you listened to Melodrama yet?! Wow. Wow wow wow. It is an artistry beyond me. It is fantastic. If you haven’t listened to it yet, stop reading this sentence and go listen to it. Now.
Anyways. Here is my playlist for the month of June.
1. “Alone”- Halsey
A stand alone track on hopeless fountain kingdom to be sure. The vocals are amazing, the lyrics are easy to relate to, and of course Halsey’s vocals stand out as always. Definitely one of my favorite tracks on the album. It reminds me of another song, but I couldn’t tell you what it is.
Favorite lyric: I got a problem with parties cause it’s loud in my brain / And I can never say sorry cause I won’t take the blame
2. “Requiem” – Laura Dreyfuss, Michael Park, and Jennifer Laura Thompson
I finally listened to Dear Evan Hansen all the way through, and this has to be one of the most underrated tracks of the entire show. I never hear anyone mention it, and it deserves to be mentions. It talks about the not-so-pretty part of losing a not-so-loved loved one.
Favorite lyric: Why should I play the grieving girl and lie / saying that I miss you / and that my world has gone dark without your light?
3. “Bad Liar” – Selena Gomez
While I’m not usually one for popular pop songs (not by choice, just by taste) this strangely simple beat with its easy to follow melody caught my ear. An easy summer song to sing along to, this is definitely on my “getting ready” playlist in the morning. I have been enjoying Selena’s new music as of late, and cannot wait for the new album to drop.
Favorite lyric: With my feelings on fire / guess I’m a bad liar
4. “No More Sad Songs”- Little Mix
It still baffles me how Little Mix hasn’t broken into mainstream American pop. I love their new album, especially when I’m feeling very “16” if you get what I mean. A true pop icon, this song has a fun, upbeat sound, that will have you chanting for “no more sad songs” all night long.
Favorite lyric: Starting to realize / no matter what I do / I will only hurt myself, tryna hurt you
5. “Supercut”- Lorde
This song. This SONG. I cannot talk enough about this song. This song literally feels like that scene in to Perks of Being a Wallflower where Charlie says something along the lines of “And I swear in that moment we were infinite” as he stands in the bed of the pickup truck. It feels like pure teenage recklessness in retrospect. The ending as it fades reminds you of your worst moment where everything has gone wrong and you can only imagine what your life would be like if you could control it.
Favorite lyric: In my head I do everything right / when you call I’ll forgive and not fight
6. “Writer in the Dark”- Lorde
Talk about stand alone tracks. This is the new measuring bar for all teenage angst piano ballads. (Or maybe that’s Liability. I can’t decide). Lorde finally shows off her amazing vocals in a raw, open, and vulnerable song about loving too hard.
Favorite lyric: I am my mother’s child, I’ll love you till my breathing stops / I’ll love you till you call the cops on me.
7. “Feel No Ways”- Drake
A complete 180 from “Writer in the Dark.” If I was able to, I would put Chance the Rapper’s cover here, sadly I could not. I first discovered this song as a broken down, piano cover, but this version is just as good, in a different way. This song is all about loving someone who doesn’t love you for all you do, and thinks that you should slow down to fit their lifestyle.
Favorite lyric: I had to let go of us to show myself what I could do / And that just didn’t sit right with you
8. “The Other Side of the Door”- Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift has re-released her entire discography on Spotify, and you can bet I’ve been jamming out to some old school Tay Tay all month. Anyways, listening to Fearless again, as a teenager, I can see why everyone raves about it so much. It feels like a naive, 16 year old’s diary, and I love that. This song is so underrated, with how honest she is and how Taylor says what most people are afraid to.
Favorite lyric: I said “leave” but I really want is you / to stand outside my window throwing pebbles / screaming “I’m in love with you.”
9. “Love”- Lana del Rey
I’m not a huge Lana del Rey fan, but this song hit me hard. A slow, easy song, this song talks about the youth and how we deal with relationships these days. I can’t say much more, other than the chorus is amazing.
Favorite lyric: Doesn’t matter cause it’s enough / to be young and in love
10. “Untouchable”- Taylor Swift
A cover that definitely deserves to be on an album, “Untouchable” makes you feel like you’re stuck and can only think about what it will be like when you are free. “Moonstruck” is the best word to describe this word in my opinion.
Favorite lyric: You got to come on / come on / say that we’ll be together
Aaaaaaaand that’s all I’ve got for ya folks! Hope you enjoyed it! I’m working on some other stuff right now, but for now, this is the easiest thing I can do to at least post something once a month.
